Fine Settimana

Week one comes to a close.  Still very frustrated with learning Italian.  As I said, I've been doing this on and off much of my life, and I am now very impatient, wanting to snap my fingers and be able to speak fluently.  I must speak a little better than it seems to me, as I continually have people telling me that I speak rather well.  I think they are mainly being kind.  I probably can string together a few coherent thoughts.  But, then very difficult to understand the rapid responses that come back at me, and to then try and formulate more answers.  Perhaps this will take more like a year, rather than one month.  Pretty uneventful day.  I did ride metro for the first time to get to my massage.  I'm always impressed with transit systems such as this, as Minnesota seems to be just out of the horse and buggy days when it comes to moving people around.  I bought a week unlimited pass for the Metro and Autobus for 16 euro, and will branch out my explorations of city to places beyond my walks.  Day tempered by news from home of Uncle Jim entering hospital.  Maybe surrounded by all these saints and Basilicas, I can find help.  Worth a shot.  Getting up early to accompany Maria Grazia to market (not sure which one.)  So, buona notte.

  1. Your prayers and all the saints and candles at the beautiful churches of Rome will help bring peace to both of you.
And, it is a good sign that you are frustrated with your speaking. It means that you have moved from nimble tourist Italian to meaningful conversations, and the replies come back to you rapid-fire because your speaking is so much better. This is good. Hang in there and remember the frustration is a natural part of the process, and, it HAS only been a week!
The markets are beautiful in their cacophony as well as visuals. With your new prowess around a camera, share some of it with us tomorrow.
Will include your uncle in my prayers. Buon weekend, lo meriti tanto. Un abbraccio!

  2. PS we caught the hint about you staying there a year instead of a month. Let me know to which address I should send your carta di Natale. A presto.
