Beatification

Another beautiful day in Roma.  I haven't had a day without sunshine since arriving.  Tomorrow supposed to be clouds.  Back to beginner class today, just to further confound you as you were guessing I'd stick with the good looking girls.  Tempting, but couldn't handle frustration of missing half of what was going on.  Besides, my kids raised me to be a slacker.  After class, took metro to Vatican just to look around.  (Walked out this morning without camera, so I guess without pictures, nothing really happened today.)  Not sure if you are aware of fact that this May 1 is a huge day here as Pope John Paul II is being beatified.  Had to do some quick research on this, found that this is first step on way to sainthood.  He needed one miracle to get this far (supposedly cured a nun of Parkinson's) and needs a second to turn up before becoming a full saint.  I'm sure one of you can correct me on this or provide more details, as I'm pretty sketchy on the sainthood process. They are already making changes to the piazza to accommodate the huge crowds of people expected to descend on the city.  Although crowds not necessarily expected to reach the 3 million level that showed up for his funeral.  There already seemed to be pretty large crowds around the Vatican.  I'm set to leave here April 29, but with all the people coming in, I'm sure I may not be able to get out of the country until late this summer.  Hope someone will explain this to my boss.  I returned to La Forchetta d'oro for late lunch.  I'm now a regular there, so Omar, the owner came over to say welcome, and shake my hand.  Just ordered scottoditto and a salad.  But, Omar threw in an appetizer of eggplant and potato.  The scottoditto (lamb chops) were very good today.  I realized I've been almost a vegetarian this trip, with many forms of pasta, some with fish or seafood, but the only meat has been today, and once last week with the lamb.  Following main course, Omar brought over a plate of cheese and more bread as he said it would go well with the wine I needed to finish off.  So, thought I was ordering light, but left stuffed, as I would have insulted Omar had I not eaten everything.  Needed to walk around in order to be able to eat Maria's pasta alla norma with the fresh eggplant we bought on Saturday.  Sorry for boring you to death as this seems to have turned into a food blog.  I'll try and do something tomorrow besides eat.  Ciao

  1. Don't worry about boring everyone with your food posts I think we are all living and eating the Italian experience through your blog, at least I know I am.

  3. No, you are not just eating. You are also doing your fair share of drinking... vino and grappa, it sounds like. I heard today that stock prices for scotch have plummeted. News flash: I heard thru grapevine that Sisy is in hospital. Caterina di Nuova may arrive before your next post. And yes, you had the beatification to sainthood steps correct. You must've been listening in altar boy class; perhaps that was a slacker group as well. Buon mercoledi' domani!
